Ethernet Over Coax (EoC )

Broadband connections through existing coaxial cabling

Upgrading networks to high speed broadband access could not be easier. EOC technology enables you to use existing coaxial cabling to bring broadband access and services to end customers, without costly and time consuming re-cabling work! EOC products provide speeds of up to 100 Mbps per customer by using the very same coaxial cabling that is already used for traditional television services.

The Ethernet over Coax (EoC) system provided the same level quality of service and performance as an entirely new LAN networks, but without troublesome rewiring. Using coaxial cable for broadband access ensures the high streaming bitrates and error free transmission necessary for video and IPTV services, something for which wireless networks cannot be retied on.

EoC system contains all the features that modern IPTV solutions require from access solutions. Multicasting with fast leave and rate limiting per customer or connection are only examples of the necessities that are normally needed. Although networks are often upgraded to support IPTV at the same time as broadband connection while existing TV services are left untouched.

The two components of EoC.

The EoC system can be used for networks which has a cascaded topology or a star topology in what is often called “The last Mile “.

The EoC Cascade is a system adapted for coaxial networks where the customer wall outlets are in a cascade; this means that several customers share a single cable. Master modem is placed in the basement of an apparent block or in a street cabinet close to the connected houses where as a customer modem is placed next to the any existing TV wall outlet.

The EoC – Star is a system adapted for network with star topology. This means that each customer is connected in the last mile with his own cable and thus every home gets the full data speed. At the heart of the star networks is an active Ethernet multi-tap and in the home the wall outlet is replaced with a passive Ethernet outlet. This outlet is nothing more than so called balun and any CPE can be directly connected to the Ethernet port of the outlet.

Triple Play:

The EoC system can support triple play IP solutions (data, voice and video). Each service has it specific demand on class of services (CoS ) and delays. The data services can be based on best effort high speed IP connectivity. to separate users from each other in the IP connectivity is based services Virtual LAN (VLAN) specified in the IEEE 802. 1 Q standard.

Voice service can be delivered to the end user based on VoIP techniques such as SIP. Delays are managed in the EOC network by giving the VoIP packets a high priority in the priority field of the VLAN tag, as described in the 802, 1 p standard VoIP at the customer premises can be implemented using a build – in VoIP gateway or a Stand Alone Media Terminal Adapter (SMTA0).

Also for video service like video on demand (VOD) using unicast , priority tags in the VLANs are used to prioritise this data. The priority of video services is normally somewhere between the nest effort data services and the high priority voice services in total eight priority classes are supported in the EoC system.

Customer Modem Installation

The ECM 104 customer modem gives the end customer a chance to do a self installation of the modem. The ECM 104 is packaged in a sophisticated carton box and includes a quick installation guide takes the customer step by-step through the installation via picture and makes the installation fully plug and play.

The four Ethernet ports on the modem can be used in the in-home installation to connect mulitiple personal computers. The lights on the modem give clear indication if the connection to personal computers is properly established and if traffic is active on the link. The modem also has a factory reset button and a standby button which will bring the modem into a sleeping mode enabling energy saving functionality.
